Nokia – Making the invisible visible with a hybrid experience

Making complex mining network technology tangible through hybrid, interactive storytelling

The challenge Nokia faced

Nokia needed help making a complex network tech tangible and exciting for their clients.

Traditional screens failed to spark engagement or show real-world impact.

They wanted something unique to stand out and drive deeper client interaction.

The solution we provided

We delivered a hybrid demo: physical 3D-printed mine + interactive HTML5 digital twin.

A custom tracking software brought real-time visuals into an immersive demo.

Our in-house team created the installation using 3D-printed models based on a laser-scanned real-world location.

To support storytelling, a digital twin was created, resulting in an interesting, easy-to-control package.

The final solution was delivered in a turnkey fashion for the Nokia Bell Labs Centennial event in New Jersey.

A creative technology that brings more ‘intelligence on site’

Mining sites are mazes that come with a lot of challenges;

  • they’re vast,

  • they evolve fast

  • and misalignment between decision making

  • and the reality of the field can cost millions.

In such an environment, being able to experience the reality of the field from afar isn’t a nice-to-have; it becomes a necessity.

A cognitive digital mine platform to bring intelligence on site

To help face the abovementioned, Nokia developed a cognitive digital platform that brings solutions matching the challenges of the terrain in real time.

The solution collects telemetry data from every connected piece of equipment, worker device, and sensor in range, feeding it into a constantly evolving mesh network, bringing intelligence in the field by enabling better decision-making supported by data collected in real time.

Nokia isn’t just connecting devices; it’s optimising the network in real time. With the help of AI and machine learning, they can cut delays, offer smarter routing, and streamline autonomous operations.

In a field where downtime can be very costly, Nokia stands as the only player offering this level of operational optimisation.

Turning observers into active participants

To help clients truly grasp the importance of these revolutionary networks, we created a 3D-printed replica of the mine itself. This isn’t just a model, it’s an interactive, laser-scanned reproduction powered by data from drones.

In other words, one can literally hold the mine in their hands, seeing where and how the network pulsed through the site.

But we didn’t stop there.

To make the experience more memorable, we built a digital twin of the mine, an HTML5-based, fully interactive demo.

This hybrid setup allowed potential customers to explore the site both physically and virtually. From passive observers, they became active participants.

“Say goodbye to boring sales presentations. This highly interactive and hybrid demo turns the audience into active participants and gives consultants a unique chance to place themselves in the shoes of their prospective customers.”

Creating experiences that create memories

Traditional 100% screen-based demos cause visitor fatigue and do not work as a conversation starter. And so, we knew that simply showing slides or dashboards wouldn't be enough to engage an audience.

The hybrid approach, combining tactile, real-world interaction with cutting-edge digital immersion, was the key to sparking curiosity and driving engagement.

“The demo unlocked the value of our cognitive digital platform. It goes beyond attention, and showcases the value of our technology through interactive and immersive storytelling. Simply amazing”

- Lelio Di Martino, General Manager at Nokia Cognitive Digital Mine

The result? A truly unique experience.

Prospective customers get to play with the model, navigate the network virtually, and see firsthand how Nokia brings an entire mine to life.

"Because the demo ecosystem is both hybrid and modular, it can be configured for different stakeholders or deployed purely digitally, making it a scalable investment that evolves through continuous development.”

More than a sales tool, a learning experience

This hybrid experience was designed to make Nokia’s technology tangible for clients, but its value doesn’t stop there. It is a powerful tool for education and training inside Nokia.

For network engineers, it is more than just a visualisation, it’s immersion.

It is a way to experience how solutions behave in a real-world environment without ever stepping foot in the mine.

Instead of reading about the technology, they can interact with it.

They can:

  • watch how the network responds to different scenarios,
  • test their knowledge,
  • build an instinct for how things work under pressure.

A mine is a difficult place for connectivity. Deep tunnels, heavy machinery, and constant movement all make coverage a challenge. With the digital twin, engineers don’t just hear about these difficulties, they see them, understand them, and learn how to overcome them.

The talent and tech powering the experience

We love building experiences where the digital and physical worlds work in perfect harmony.

For this project, our team engineered a hybrid solution on a robust HTML5-based framework, ensuring that the interactive demo runs smoothly across devices, is future-proof, and can be adapted or scaled for different use cases.

“The main challenge for us is to capture and understand what our clients are trying to communicate and create memorable experiences that empower them. In this particular case, I’m delighted to say we have succeeded.”

At its core is our custom-built tracking software, developed entirely in-house. Designed to be flexible and replicable, it allows us to bring similar interactive network visualisations to other industries and environments without starting from scratch, saving time while maintaining precision.

Our deep 3D expertise is another critical factor. With a highly skilled in-house team of 3D artists, AR/VR developers, and animation specialists, we can faithfully reproduce any environment, from a mine to a manufacturing plant, down to the smallest detail. These aren’t just “pretty visuals”: they’re built from accurate operational data, drone-based laser scans, and high-fidelity 3D modelling.

Because we also understand the coding and engineering side, we can fuse these realistic visuals with interactive software, enabling real-time engagement. This rare blend of artistic capability and technical know-how is what transforms a static model into a living, dynamic tool that people can explore and manipulate.

In short, by merging a physical replica, its digital twin, and operational intelligence, we created an experience that doesn’t just inform end users, it immerses them.

A rewarded experience

The impact of this work hasn’t gone unnoticed. In fact, Nokia’s innovative blend of AI, IoT, and cognitive mining technologies, brought to life through this project, earned them top honors at the Mining Technology Excellence Awards 2025. Read more here.

Even if the technology showcased here is fully tailored for Nokia and Vale’s needs, it is also modular. This means we can build similar hybrid experiences for various use cases.
